Visit a country of volcanoes when you come to El Salvador. Although it is not a country that lends itself to tourists traveling alone, there are many types of tours that will give you the vacation of a lifetime. There are many archaeological sites of excavated Mayan ruins for you to visit and beautiful scenery to photograph. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April. The roads are in good condition during this time and there are many cultural festivals. With the many volcanoes there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, as well as excellent surfing off the beaches.


Take in the spectacular vistas from the Cerro Verde National Park and see the steaming volcanoes. Visit the ?Place of Many Corn Fields? ? lllobascco ? which is famous for its ceramics or the pristine setting of Isla Monetcristo.

San Salvador

Although it is not really a pretty city, San Salvador does have many tourist attractions. Visit the domes Cathedral Metropolitana and the main plaza of the city, Plaza Barrios. The murals on the ceiling of the Teatro Nacional are a sight to see and the exhibits of archaeological finds at the Museo Nacional David J. Guzman are quite impressive. Visit the Jardin Botanico La Laguna to see an attractive garden built on what was once the bottom of the crater of a volcano.

Ruinas de Tazumal

The ruins of Tazumal are impressive Mayan ruins and the best preserved of all the ruins in Central America. According to the archaeologists, these ruins date back to 5000 B.C. and span a 1000-year period.

Travel to El Salvador

The airport of San Salvador is the hub of international travel from cities all over the US and Central and South America. You can also travel to El Salvador by bus from Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama.

Travel Within El Salvador

Since this is a tiny country, you can travel from one end of it to the other in a few hours. There are buses, but they tend to be overcrowded, but the taxi service is excellent. You can also rent a car in San Salvador, but you have to keep in mind that most of the roads are dirt roads. There are also domestic flights within the country.

The main language is Spanish, but many people do speak English.


You do not need a travel Visa, but you do need a passport valid for at least six months from the date of departure from the country. Americans and Canadians do need to purchase a tourist card when they arrive. This usually costs about $10.


Crime is very high in El Salvador. Tourists should make arrangements to have someone from the hotel or tour group meet them at the airport. You should exercise great caution if you are travelling alone or at night.

Food and Drink

There are many different types of restaurants in El Salvador and you can dine on food from all over the world. The typical diet of the country consists of beans and rice and the most famous dish of the country is Pupusa ? corn tortilla filled with cheese.


Shop for the beautiful towels in Maya designs at the markets and shopping centers in the large towns. The stores are open from 10 A.M. to 7 P.M. Monday to Saturday.


San Salvador has a few nightclubs and bars where you can have an enjoyable time. There are also cinemas showing films with English subtitles. The best place for nightly entertainment is Zona Rosa, where there are many exclusive bars and nightclubs, as well as restaurants.
