St Lucia

St. Lucia is one of the favorite destinations for vacationers in the Caribbean. The main tourist places are in the northern part of the island. When you visit the whole island, you will find most of it untouched and the spectacular beauty is the same as what Columbus saw in 1492. There are banana plantations, exotic plants and fishing villages scattered throughout.

Unless you are adventurous, the best way to get around is by taxi. The roads are really bad and unmarked so it is quite easy to get lost. The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar and although most of the people speak English, they have a heavy accent.

Most of the hotels and resorts are very expensive, so you do have to search for accommodations to fit within your budget. Since most of the hotels are right on the beach and also contain swimming pools, you won?t have to go far to get in the water.

The top beaches on the island include Pigeon Point Bay, Reduit Bay and Choc Bay. Marigot Bay is a cove with several beaches and the beach at Vieux Fort is ideal for swimming.

You won?t be bored for lack of activities. Enjoy boating, camping, fishing, golf, hiking, horseback riding, scuba diving and tennis, as well as all kinds of watersports

Attractions

While on St. Lucia you can see a working banana plantation, visit picturesque villages and visit the public market. Pigeon Island National Historic park contains many artefacts and displays detailing the history of the island.

Soufriere has two volcanic points making them visible for miles around. If you like mountain climbing, you should only try to climb Gros Piton and even then you have to have permission. Mount Soufriere is a drive in volcano with sulfur springs, hissing streams and million year old craters. The Diamond Botanical Gardens and Mineral Baths are located deep in a lush tropical forest and is one of the geological attractions that tourists love to see.

There are also nature reserves where you can get a close look at the wildlife of the island as well as the exotic plants that are native to the Caribbean. The Frigate Islands have large colonies of birds as does the Maria Islands. You can arrange a tour to either or both of these locations.

Accommodations and Dining

If you want inexpensive accommodations, you only have two choices ? Bay Gardens Inn or Hummingbird Beach Resort. Both of these have all kinds of amenities that will provide you with an enjoyable stay. There are also moderately priced accommodations as well as five star resorts such as the Anse Chastanet or the Jalousie Hilton Resort.

Restaurants are available in all areas of the island and as a rule they offer Caribbean or West Indian cuisine. You can have American food at The Lime in Rodney Bay and Indian Food at Razmataz. In Gros Islet, the Great House offers French, Creole and International cuisine and at The Still in Soufriere, you can feast on Creole fare.

Shopping and Nightlife

Most of the shopping is available in Castries with duty-free prices. Pointe Seraphine has the best selection of stores and on the Gros Islet Highway, you can shop at Gablewoods Mall.

For your evening enjoyment, the main entertainment is at the hotels. At least one will have a steel band at some night of the week and for barhopping Shamrock?s Pub is an Irish-style pub that really gets going on the weekend. The Late Lime is the most popular dance club for listening to piano music while you sip your drink, Charlie?s is the place to go.
